Built to Last

Help group members see the strength of working in unity.

Purpose: To help group members see the strength of working together in the Body of Christ

Supplies Needed: Several packs of drinking straws

Activity: Divide the group into teams of four or five members. Give each subgroup two packs of plastic drinking straws, about 200 straws for each group. Challenge each subgroup build the tallest and sturdiest straw house that they can in five minutes.

When the time is up, appoint three judges (from different subgroups) to determine which straw house is the winner. (You can allow discussion here for a few minutes.) When the judging is over, have everyone gather and discuss the following unpacking questions.

Unpacking Questions

  • What contributed to building a tall and sturdy straw house?
  • What is the most frustrating part of the activity?
  • What qualities are needed for building the Body of Christ?
  • How can each person contribute in making the church stronger? The group?
