Successful Home Cell Groups

An oldie, but a goodie, about the cell group movement.

This book is an oldie (1981) but goodie! Successful Home Cell Groups gives the story of where the whole cell/small groups movement began, telling of Yonggi Cho's beginnings and his development of making cells the central element of the church.

In 1964 Yonggi Cho was on the way to his goal of having the largest church in Korea. That's when God stepped in and began the process of breaking him. "When I entered the ministry, in my heart there was a hidden goal to become a famous and successful preacher. I loved God and wanted to work for Him, but my hidden motive was always the drive to succeed. I was very egotistical, and I wanted to do everything my own way. God had to destroy all that; otherwise the church would have been my work, not His." Later Cho adds, "God will use people only according to their brokenness. I know now that God really could not use me until I was completely broken, until I could no longer rely on my own strength."

So break "the great Cho" He did. From 1964 to 1974 Yonggi Cho was ill following his complete collapse. During this time he began to search the Scriptures to see how the church could and should be pastored. As he studied Ephesians 4:11 and Acts 2:46, 47, he came to realize that the New Testament pattern was to train the people to minister to one another from in their houses! The church was not building-centered. In fact all throughout the New Testament the church was meeting to be pastored in the homes! When he went to Exodus 18, he was challenged by Moses' plan of delegating ministry. Out of this the cell church was born. But when he presented the plan to his deacons they agreed it was biblical, but objected due to their business. They couldn't see doing for free what they were already paying ...
