Be Still

Reflect on Scripture that reminds us to take time to be still.

Leader: So often our lives are hectic, to say the least. Our lives are full of duties and demands. Some of the things we are called to do bring contentment and pleasure. Some of our day to day living is wrought with disappointment and pain. But we can experience something that those who do not know Jesus cannot … we can experience peace and pleasure and protection even amidst the craziness of our existence. But we must do one thing… be still. Be still before God, be still and hear His voice, be still and revel in the promise of His presence, be still and know that He can take care of everything. Listen now to the promises we find in scripture about practicing the "Be still" attitude of living.

Reader One
The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still." Exodus 14:14
God promises to fight for you, so be still.

Reader Two
The priests read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was being read.
Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to them all, "This day is sacred to the Lord your God. Do not mourn or weep." For all the people had been weeping as they listened to the words of the Law.
Nehemiah said, "Go and enjoy choice food and sweet drinks, and send some to those who have nothing prepared. This day is sacred to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength."
The Levites calmed all the people, saying, "Be still, for this is a sacred day. Do not grieve." Neh. 8:8-11
God promises to bring you strength through the joy of knowing him, so be still.

Reader Three
Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.
Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil. Psalm 37:2-8
God promises to be worthy of your trust, so be still.

Reader One
Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth. Psalm 46:10
God promises that all the world will know Him and worship Him one day, so be still.

Reader Four
He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. Mark 4:39
God promises to be in control of every little detail of our lives, so be still.

Leader
Take a few minutes now to sit in silence. Please quietly read back over these promises and then BE STILL before the Lord.

Close in a spoken prayer together.
