The Reformation: The Four Strands
From the Reformation emerged four Protestant traditions--Lutheran, Reformed, Anglican, and Anabaptist--and eventually hundreds of Protestant denominations.
Awakenings
In the 1700s and 1800s, Christianity experienced revivals that deeply affected individuals and society.
Missions Explosion
Just two hundred years ago Protestant Christianity was mainly a European and American phenomenon. Today it is truly global--thanks to the nineteenth-century missionary movement.
Modernism
Modernism, the worldview founded on Enlightenment principles and applied by thinkers such as Freud, Marx, and Darwin, has affected Christianity in the twentieth century.
The New Protestants
Twentieth-century America saw the emergence of three groups: fundamentalists, evangelicals, and Pentecostals/charismatics.
