I've found that physically visiting a leader's small group in session goes a long way toward encouraging them. I'll share with the group the strong points of their leader. Boasting about leaders in front of their groups builds their esteem and solidifies their roles.

Then, immediately after the group meeting, I often take leaders aside and compliment them on one or two great things they did well with their group. I've found that this kind of face-to-face encouragement goes a long way in forging solid relationships with my leaders, and is a great way to honor them.

I also enjoy using the phone to honor and encourage my leaders. I'll call different leaders after their group meetings to get feedback on how things went. Leaders like sharing what has been happening in their groups, and they are usually grateful for the personal interest shown. Sometimes, when group members don't show up and a leader gets discouraged, my call means a lot more and provides the comfort to keep trying. For many leaders, this kind of attention helps them over the discouraging hump and toward a future fruitful ministry.
